Thies Mynther

Thies Mynther (*1968), is a german composer, lyricist and producer. He is living and working predominantly in Hamburg and Berlin.
Since 1989 he contributed to over hundred album releases. As member of bands like Phantom/Ghost, Stella or Das Bierbeben, collaborator of Miss Kittin, Chicks On Speed and Dillon he has played over 1000 concerts in very diverse contexts.
Over the years he developed a growing interest in music set apart from the classical european tradition of harmonic functionality, in electronic club music and other musical languages.
This fascination led him to occasional sound design and score compositions for movies in the early years of the new millenium.
It was only a small step to the theatrical realm from there: Driven by a deep personal obsession with american musical theater he decided to dedicate himself to working with music in dramatic stage contexts in 2010.
He worked as composer, musician and musical director with a broad range of directors from Nicolas Stemann, Sebastian Baumgarten, Bastian Kraft, Brit Bartkowiak, Ulrich Matthes, but also with performative groups like Showcase Beat Le Mot and inititiated collaborations with artists like Cosima von Bonin (as Phantom Ghost) or israeli entrepreneur/actor/director Jason Danino Holt.
Among other places he has worked at the Schauspielhaus and Kampnagel in Hamburg, at Deutsches Theater, Haus der Berliner Festspiele, Akademie der Künste and HAU in Berlin and at the National theater SND in Bratislava .

He is currently focussed on writing and realizing new forms of musical theater.

​Thies Mynther, 1968 geboren, lebt seit 1991 in Hamburg und zeitweise in Berlin.

Seit 1989 hat er auf über hundert Albumveröffentlichungen als Musiker, Autor und Produzent mitgewirkt. In vielen Bands wirkte er selbst als festes Mitglied mit, z.B. bei Phantom Ghost, Stella und Superpunk, arbeitete mit Miss Kittin, Chicks On Speed und Dillon und hat dabei weit über tausend Konzerte bestritten.

Durch die Auseinandersetzung mit elektronischer Clubmusik, die sich immer weiter von der klassischen europäischen Funktionsharmonik emanzipierte, fand er Interesse an anderen Tonsprachen, verlor dabei aber nie das Interesse an der Verbindung von Musik und Text.

Er war seit 2004 gelegentlich auch als Filmmusiker/-komponist und Sounddesigner tätig (u.a. “Die Anruferin”von Felix Randau und “Wie Ich ein freier Reisebegleiter wurde” von Jan Peters).

Zunehmend fasziniert von Musik in dramaturgischer Funktion und getrieben von einer lang gehegten persönlichen Obsession für das amerikanische Musiktheater wandte er sich 2009 dem Theater zu. Dabei hatte er das Glück, als Komponist, Musiker und musikalischer Leiter mit so unterschiedlichen Regisseuren wie Nicolas Stemann, Sebastian Baumgarten, Bastian Kraft, Brit Bartkowiak und Showcase Beat Le Mot zu arbeiten. Er war u.a. zu Gast am Schauspielhaus Hamburg, dem Deutschen Theater Berlin, dem Hebbel am Ufer und dem Staatstheater Mainz.
2014 erschien im Rahmen von Retrospectres, einer Art gemeinsamen performativen Werkschau von Phantom Ghost und Cosima von Bonin im Haus der Berliner Festspiele/Kampnagel HH/Mumok Wien ein von ihm ausgearbeitetes Notenbuch mit 22 ausgewählten Kompositionen der Gruppe bei der Galerie Buchholz.
Aktuell konzentriert er sich auf das Schreiben und die Konzeption von neuen, kunstnahen Musikthaterformen.
